A Beautiful Winter Setting
Despite being a winter wedding, the couple was blessed with an exceptionally sunny—yet crisp—day. The golden light cast a dreamy glow over the barn’s surroundings, making for stunning photographs. Hazel Gap Barn’s famous courtyard, with its roaring fire pits, felt like a cozy retreat, allowing guests to embrace the wintery charm of the day.
A Romantic First Look
Before the ceremony, Matthew and Alexandra chose to have a first look—an intimate moment just for the two of them before they exchanged vows. Set against the barn’s beautiful oak doors, their first look was emotional, heartfelt, and a perfect way to start their wedding day. The anticipation and excitement were evident as they shared a quiet moment together before walking down the aisle.
A Ceremony Full of Love
The ceremony took place inside Hazel Gap Barn’s stunning main hall, with its exposed brick walls and candlelit ambiance creating an atmosphere of warmth and romance. Alexandra made a grand entrance, arriving in a classic white London cab, adding a touch of timeless elegance to the day. The couple exchanged heartfelt vows in front of their family and friends, surrounded by twinkling fairy lights and flickering candles that enhanced the barn’s cozy winter feel.
Live Music & Festive Atmosphere
Music played a big role in Matthew and Alexandra’s wedding celebrations. During the drinks reception, guests were treated to the delicate sounds of a harpist, which added a beautiful, ethereal touch to the afternoon. As the evening celebrations began, a brass band took to the stage, filling Hazel Gap Barn with energy and excitement. The lively music ensured that the dance floor was packed all night, with guests dancing beneath the barn’s twinkling lights.
Evening Delights: Marshmallows & Sparklers
As night fell, the celebrations continued with toasted marshmallows around the firepits, a perfect way to embrace the crisp winter evening. The couple also had a sparkler send-off, creating a truly magical moment as their loved ones lit up the night sky in their honor. Hazel Gap Barn’s rustic yet elegant setting provided the perfect environment for a warm and intimate winter wedding.
A Second Celebration – Their Serbian Orthodox Wedding
A month after their Hazel Gap Barn wedding, Matthew and Alexandra honored Alexandra’s Serbian heritage with a traditional Serbian Orthodox wedding at St George’s Church in Leicester. Serbian weddings are rich in history and customs, and their second celebration was no exception.
Traditional Serbian Wedding Rituals
The day began with the breaking of the ceremonial bread (Česnica) in the morning, a tradition symbolizing unity and prosperity for the newlyweds. Unlike Western weddings, where the groom sometimes ‘steals’ the bride, Alexandra’s shoes were stolen instead! Friends playfully took them, and Matthew had to negotiate to ‘buy’ them back, adding a fun and lighthearted touch to the day.
During the ceremony, the couple wore crowns as they were blessed by the priest, symbolizing their new life together. They also walked around the altar three times, signifying their first steps as husband and wife in the eyes of the Orthodox Church.
A Serbian Celebration to Remember
The reception was a lively affair filled with traditional Serbian music and dancing, with guests joining in the famous kolo dance, a spirited circle dance that brought everyone together. As always, food and drink played a huge role, with plenty of rakija (Serbian brandy) flowing as guests celebrated into the night.
Matthew and Alexandra’s wedding journey was a perfect blend of English countryside elegance at Hazel Gap Barn and rich Serbian traditions, making their love story even more special. Whether it was the warmth of the barn’s candlelit glow or the vibrancy of the Serbian celebrations, their wedding was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
